Description: What can parents and educators do to help a child with hearing loss succeed socially? What factors influence the success of a deaf individual from a social perspective? Paul Jacobs will describe his PhD thesis research on the psychosocial attributes and strategies required for everyday living. Paul studied successful deaf and hearing adults and will share his interesting and surprising research results. Educators, parents and individuals who are deaf will find this session rewarding. Practical exercises for applying his research findings will be demonstrated.

Paul will be available to sign copies of his book, Neither-Nor: A Young Australian's Experience with Deafness. In the afternoon, he will hold a dialog session with deaf and hard-of-hearing teens and young adults about his experiences and research findings.

For parents in the afternoon, Joanne Travers will offer Parent Advocacy Training (PAT). PAT provides information and resources for advocating for children through negotiation skills and a foundation in legal information. PAT was designed and developed by AG Bell parents interested in sharing their wealth of experience in advocating for their children. Through PAT, parents learn from the successes and failures of other parents as they all learn to achieve better services for their children with hearing loss.
