| TOP 10 THINGS TO KNOW about captioning at the movies |
- Rear Window Captioning is for everyone, kids and adults, who read and need captioning to help understand the dialogue in movies. If you know anyone who avoids going to movies with family and friends, because they have a hard time understanding the words, then help them find out about RWC offered in their area. Others with vision impaiment will be interested in the audio Descriptive Video Service (DVS).
- After you purchase tickets for a RWC movie, go to the customer service counter to request the RWC viewer screen which you position in your cup holder.
- The sock which covers the viewer screen, to keep it from getting scratched, is handy to make the viewer base fit in the cup holder more tightly if needed.
- If you have not used RWC, each theater experience is a little different, due to slope of seating and distance from the rear projection boards.
- You can sit anywhere in the theater to see the show and you will discover what seating area works best for you. I recommend trying the middle first.
- If your first experience with RWC is a little frustrating, just keep at it. With practice, it gets easier to adjust your viewer screen.
- The captioning is only visible to the person using the portable viewer screen. No one around you sees the captioning, unless they are using a viewer too.
- RWC doesn't bother anyone else, although in a smaller theater a slight glow, at the rear of the theater, might be visible to some people.
- Not many theaters in each state are equipped to show movies with captioning. That is improving, but the choices are still limited. You are fortunate if you live in the Boston area or within driving distance to one of the movie theaters that offers captioned access or audio desriptive service for those with vision impairment.
- Only one movie at a time is shown with captioning at the chain theater locations, so if a theater has 12 screens (theaters), only one theater is equipped to show a movie with RWC. The movies chosen to be shown with captioning is determined by the movie studios.
